Root Beer #2.

I’ve decided I want to try as many glass-bottled root beer’s as I can find. I’ve been picking them up as I see them, and will be sharing my thoughts with you here. Why? I have no idea…other than drinking glass-bottled soda’s makes me happy. And I have a fridge full of them to prove it.

Today’s test: Maine Root Root Beer.
Emily Madsen rootbeer

The whole shtick behind this brew is that it’s organically sweetened and environmentally friendly. No chemicals, or artificial sweeteners. Just bold, simple, root beer. The marketing gimmicks convinced me to give it a try….but I’m not convinced. It tastes good at first, but has one funky aftertaste. I think they spent a little too much time on making sure they used good stuff to make it, rather than making it be good stuff. Know what I mean?

3 out of 5 stars.

Mug.

My co-worker gave me this mug today that he picked up on a recent work trip.*

Emily Mug

That’s all I have to say about that.

* Allegedly. I think there may be a much bigger story behind it than that…I’m trying to get to the bottom of it. I’ll keep y’all posted. In the mean time, just know my diet coke is being held in style.

Olympic figure skating.

1.  What the crap are they wearing?

2. What are the commentators talking about?  (And I quote, “Their strengths are strong.”)

I do not get it, though I judge it.

2009, in list form.

Alright, here it is.  My 2009 in review…well, at least part of it.  Below are my favs in list form (not necessarily in their numbered order) of my loves and interests of the last year.  There is a lot that these lists do not cover. But you’ll get the idea.

Concerts:
1. Brandi Carlile – The Paramount – Seattle, WA
2. Brandi Carlile  - The State Room – Salt Lake City, UT
3. Adele  The Murray – Murray, UT
4. Indigo Girls w/ Gregory Alan Isakov – Red Butte Garden – Salt Lake City, UT
5. Ingrid Michaelson – The Venue – Salt Lake City, UT

*Truth be told, I don’t go to bad concerts.  The best part of most shows are the people I share them with (read: friends).  I only saw a fratction of the shows I saw in ‘08, but I still came through with quality.

Movies:
1. (500) Days of Summer
2. We Live in Public
3. Away We Go
4. Up in The Air
5. Adam.

Songs (I get two extra, don’t judge):
1. Before it Breaks – Brandi Carlile
2. Last Train  - Imogen Heap
3. Virginia Mae  Gregory Alan Isakov
4. Touching the Ground – Brandi Carlile
5. That Moon Song – Gregory Alan Isakov
6. Soldier – Ingrid Michaelson
7. This Women’s Work – Greg Laswell (cover)

4. Imogen Heap – Ellipse
5. Indigo Girls – Poseidon and the Bitter Bug

Favorite Artists of ‘09:
1. Brandi Carlile
2. Gregory Alan Isakov
3. Greg Laswell
4. Indigo Girls
5. The Beatles

TV Shows
1. Friday Night Lights
2. Grey’s Anatomy
3. 90210
4. LA Ink

5. So You Think You Can Dance?

Notable Experiences:
1. Bought my first house.  I think I’m officially grown up now. (Maybe not…)
2. Sat on the floor at an LA Laker game, in LA. Met Penny Marshal, and saw more celebs than I can name.
3. Finally saw Wicked.  Did my best to not sing out loud.
4. Sat front row at The Leno Show and hi-fived him during the intro.
5. Celebrated my parents 50th year of marriage.
6. Organized a Wallflowers concert at the Salt Air, slept 2 hours, and flew to Seattlle for one of the best days on record that ended in a BC show. Amazing 24 hours.
7. Made new, life long friends.
8. Started down the road of not hating dogs.
9. Watched my two best friends both get married.
10. I spent one week living as a rock-star (of sorts) and nearly had to check myself into the hospital for exhaustion at the end of it.
11. Learned how to take care of a house. Mow lawn, trim trees, and all.

To summarize:
I still drink too much diet coke, and eat too much pizza.  I have also added Eggos to my list of must have foods.  I have laughed, cried, worried, loved, talked, and learned in ‘09.  I am happy to say I am facing 2010 as a stronger person… I have high hopes that it be my best year yet.

And I know, I love Brandi Carlile.  Deal with it.  You should too.

Never my choice.

There is nothing for a vegetarian at Arby’s. Nothing. Plus, they serve Pepsi.

I have no idea how they stay in business.

I looked out my window…

… and what did I see? My neighbor standing on his car, shaking apples from his tree.

About 20 minutes later he attached a tow rope to the biggest branch, then tied it to his bumper. As he headed east on our street, he ripped half the tree down. Genius.

Best battery ever.

In the fall of ‘99 I spent 5 months studying in England. Stoked for the journey, I bought a small collapsable digital alarm clock.  I have used that same alarm, everyday since, for the last 10 years.  The dang thing has worked like a champ this entire decade and stuck with me through 23 countries and 32 states.

A couple weeks ago I noticed that when I pushed snooze, the alarm made a dying noise and the time display changed completely.   Not really sure why my great clock would be failing me now, I decided to check the battery.  On the casing it read ”best if used by March 2004.”

Are you catching on?  Yeah, I haven’t changed the battery once, in ten years.  How dope is that?  I felt kind of victorious and like I somehow had cheated the system for the entire first decade of the millenium.  I win.

After deciding to give the poor battery a break (I think I could have gotten a few more weeks of time out of it…no more snoozing though), I put a new* battery in.  This morning I nearly had a heart attack with the renewed volume of the alarm.  He just sounds so proud, you know?

*The battery package said it was good for robots.  You have no idea how much confidence that acknowledgment gave me.

Labor Day 09.

I headed north Sunday night to spend some time with my folks.  Our goals for Labor day included 2 things:

1. Going out to breakfast.

2. Rasberry Milkshakes.

We knocked off our goals quickly, then started looking for something to fill our day.  When my Dad threw out heading to the remote control airplane show, none of took him seriously…. but then somehow we ended up there.  For two hours.  And I might have liked. it.  A lot.  And it took me by suprise.  But I don’t think that I would go again.  Just sayin.

Don’t judge.

Luckily, no.

I spent this afternoon in a small town in Happy Valley (yes, think Provo), about 60 miles south of where I live.  The occasion being my 9 year old nephew’s baseball tournament.  Between games my sister and I decided to take her kids for a treat.  Her 4 year old daughter, is one of the best humans, and manages to crack me up almost daily.

After searching for a shake place, we finally found one in a painfully small town, in an even smaller “shopping center.” My niece, with all of our her infinite wisdom after surveying the area, looked at her mom and asked, “Do we live in this world?”

I about died laughing.  Someday, she will know how funny her question really was….
